Snow Monkeys, Obuse & Sake: A Perfect Day in Nagano
Snow Monkeys, Obuse & Sake: A Perfect Day in Nagano

A relaxed small-group Snow Monkey Tour from Nagano combining the famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, a satisfying local lunch in Obuse, premium sake, and a touch of local culture. Begin with a peaceful forest walk to see wild Japanese macaques in their natural mountain habitat.
After the monkey park, continue to Obuse for one of the tour’s most popular parts: a locally inspired set meal in a stylish restaurant inside a renovated traditional Japanese building. After lunch, enjoy free time in Obuse’s scenic streets and a guided tasting at a historic brewery featuring two premium sakes.
On standard 8:45 AM departures, guests may also choose an optional self-guided stop at Zenkoji Temple. Designed to finish earlier than many full-day snow monkey tours, this small-group experience makes it easier to continue to Tokyo, Kanazawa, Matsumoto, or your next destination.

A“ The Hills are alive “ Or rather the Nagano Alps!! My guided tour of the Togakushi shrines and surrounding forest and natural botanical areas was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Masayo OKABE was a phenomenal guide. She speaks excellent English and knows so much about Japanese culture and history in addition to the natural sciences and botany.I took the bus up from Nagano to meet her at the start of our hike near the shrine. We proceeded through a promenade of 300 year-old huge cedar trees. She made the culture of shrines in general alive for me so that I will be able to apply what I learned to all the other sites I will encounter in Japan. I had thought of doing this on my own using an all trails map, but was afraid of being attacked by bears so I hired a guide and I’m so glad I did because I got so much more out of the experience due to Masa’s knowledge. My tour lasted around five or so hours. The cost was ¥18,000. When I return to Japan, I will definitely seek her out again to explore the Alps above Nagano.![]()

Terrific izakaya tour in Nagano We had an absolutely fantastic time. Robin was a great host and guide. The choice of food venues was great. We’d never had 100% buckwheat noodles which were delicious. And we thoroughly enjoyed the conversation with him learning perspectives of Japanese culture that we otherwise would not have known about. One of the best tours we’ve been on. Highly recommended.![]()

Amazing trip to see the snow monkeys in Nagano We had a lovely day out with Kei our guide. She was very friendly and her English was excellent. She took the time to chat to everyone and made us all feel comfortable. She even surprised me by saying Thank you to me in Welsh. Unfortunately there was not much snow around but it was a beautiful sunny day and we saw loads of monkeys. Lunch was in a beautiful restaurant in Obuse. The Japanese fried chicken was delicious. The meal was followed by a sake tasting session. We were able to choose 2 types of sake each to taste so managed to taste 4 between us. We had time to wander around the lovely little town after lunch and we enjoyed the local chestnut flavoured ice cream for dessert. The driver dropped us off at the Zenkoji temple so we had plenty of time for a bit of culture to round off the day,![]()
