Tour Details
This private Snow Monkey tour is designed for travelers who want a comfortable, flexible day without managing trains, buses, winter roads, or transfers on their own. Travel by private vehicle with your local guide, visit Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, enjoy Obuse, continue to Zenkoji Temple, and finish with a relaxed sake tasting or free time depending on your group’s pace.
The route below shows the standard flow of the day. Timing may be adjusted depending on your selected pickup area, weather, winter road conditions, monkey activity, traffic, and your accommodation location.
Start your private day from one of several convenient pickup areas. This makes the tour especially useful for guests staying outside central Nagano, including hot spring towns and resort areas where public transport can be limited or time-consuming.
Travel comfortably with your own guide and private vehicle throughout the day. This is especially helpful in winter, when road conditions, bus connections, luggage, and timing can make independent travel more stressful.
- Private vehicle for your group throughout the tour
- Smooth transfers between the Snow Monkey Park, Obuse, Zenkoji Temple, sake tasting, and your pickup or drop-off location
- Private space to relax between stops, especially during the winter season
Visit Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and see wild Japanese macaques in their natural mountain setting. The peaceful forest walk is part of the experience, and in winter the snowy trail makes the visit feel especially memorable.
- Enjoy a 30–40 minute forest walk each way to the park
- See Japanese macaques in their natural mountain habitat
- Snow Monkey Park admission is included in this private tour
- Non-slip footwear is strongly recommended in snowy or icy conditions
After the Snow Monkey Park, continue to Obuse for a relaxed lunch stop and free time. Obuse is compact, charming, and known for chestnut sweets, traditional streets, cafés, local shops, gardens, sake, and its cultural connection to Hokusai.
- A comfortable lunch stop is arranged in Obuse
- Choose your meal from the available menu and pay directly at the restaurant
- Enjoy Obuse’s traditional streets, chestnut sweets, cafés, local shops, and calm atmosphere
- The Hokusai Museum may be possible depending on timing and your group’s interests; entrance fee is not included
Visit Zenkoji Temple, one of Nagano’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks. The temple town atmosphere, historic approach, local shops, and deep traditions make this a strong cultural stop after the mountain and Obuse portions of the day.
- Visit one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples
- Enjoy the atmosphere around the temple area and learn about local traditions
- Your guide will adjust the visit depending on time, weather, and your group’s pace
Finish the day with a relaxed sake tasting and a gentle introduction to Nagano’s local sake culture. It adds a refined cultural touch to the tour without making the day feel rushed or too formal.
- Guided sake tasting is included
- Learn about Nagano’s sake culture in a friendly and approachable way
- Guests who do not drink alcohol may enjoy extra free time nearby instead
After the tour, return to your selected drop-off location or an agreed point such as Nagano Station. Your guide can help you finish the day smoothly, especially if you are continuing by train or returning to your accommodation.
- Return to your selected drop-off location or agreed point
- Helpful for guests continuing by train after the tour
- Useful for guests staying in resort or hot spring areas during winter
This private tour combines the Snow Monkey Park with a comfortable private vehicle, flexible pickup options, Obuse, Zenkoji Temple, and sake tasting. It is designed to feel smooth, personal, and easy to enjoy even in the winter season.
- See wild macaques in their natural mountain habitat
- Travel comfortably with your own guide and private vehicle

A“ The Hills are alive “ Or rather the Nagano Alps!! My guided tour of the Togakushi shrines and surrounding forest and natural botanical areas was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Masayo OKABE was a phenomenal guide. She speaks excellent English and knows so much about Japanese culture and history in addition to the natural sciences and botany.I took the bus up from Nagano to meet her at the start of our hike near the shrine. We proceeded through a promenade of 300 year-old huge cedar trees. She made the culture of shrines in general alive for me so that I will be able to apply what I learned to all the other sites I will encounter in Japan. I had thought of doing this on my own using an all trails map, but was afraid of being attacked by bears so I hired a guide and I’m so glad I did because I got so much more out of the experience due to Masa’s knowledge. My tour lasted around five or so hours. The cost was ¥18,000. When I return to Japan, I will definitely seek her out again to explore the Alps above Nagano.![]()

Terrific izakaya tour in Nagano We had an absolutely fantastic time. Robin was a great host and guide. The choice of food venues was great. We’d never had 100% buckwheat noodles which were delicious. And we thoroughly enjoyed the conversation with him learning perspectives of Japanese culture that we otherwise would not have known about. One of the best tours we’ve been on. Highly recommended.![]()

Amazing trip to see the snow monkeys in Nagano We had a lovely day out with Kei our guide. She was very friendly and her English was excellent. She took the time to chat to everyone and made us all feel comfortable. She even surprised me by saying Thank you to me in Welsh. Unfortunately there was not much snow around but it was a beautiful sunny day and we saw loads of monkeys. Lunch was in a beautiful restaurant in Obuse. The Japanese fried chicken was delicious. The meal was followed by a sake tasting session. We were able to choose 2 types of sake each to taste so managed to taste 4 between us. We had time to wander around the lovely little town after lunch and we enjoyed the local chestnut flavoured ice cream for dessert. The driver dropped us off at the Zenkoji temple so we had plenty of time for a bit of culture to round off the day,![]()

Great way to experience The snow monkey park We beat the crowds which made it possible to get close to the onsen where the monkeys bathe. We enjoyed the sake tasting and lunch in the town was delicious. Masa-san was an excellent tour guide. We highly recommend this tour.
