Snow Monkey Private Tour – And So Much More: The Best One-Day Trips Around Nagano
Planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan and thinking about visiting the Snow Monkeys?
You’re not alone — the famous Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen Koen) is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in the world. But here’s the good news: a private tour to the Snow Monkeys doesn’t have to be just about the monkeys.
In fact, the best private tours go beyond just one stop. Nagano is surrounded by stunning nature, beautifully preserved towns, hot springs, castles, temples, and much more — all within 30 to 90 minutes of the Snow Monkey Park.
This guide introduces some of our favorite ways to combine the Snow Monkeys with other destinations on a customizable one-day private tour. Whether you’re visiting in spring, summer, fall, or winter, you’ll find an unforgettable route waiting for you — and at the end, we’ll show you how to easily request a fully personalized itinerary.

Where Are the Snow Monkeys?

The Snow Monkey Park is located in the mountains of northern Nagano, about 45 minutes from the city center by car (plus a short walk through a forest trail). It’s most famous in winter, when the monkeys bathe in steaming hot springs surrounded by snow. But it’s also a great experience year-round — even in summer, you can see babies playing, eating, and grooming each other.
Private tours allow you to arrive earlier (before the big crowds), take scenic back roads, and combine the visit with other nearby gems.
Why Choose a Private Tour in Nagano?
Private tours in Nagano offer unmatched flexibility and depth. From sacred forests to samurai towns, you’ll discover far more than what public group tours can provide. This is not a group tour — it’s your own private journey through Nagano, guided by locals.
📍 What Else Can You See in a Day?
Here are some of our favorite private day-trip combinations — all easily paired with a Snow Monkey visit.
🏯 Matsumoto Castle & Castle Town – A Great Private Tour Option (year-round)

One of Japan’s most beautiful original castles, Matsumoto-jo is nicknamed the “Black Crow” for its striking dark wooden exterior. You can explore the castle’s steep wooden interiors and walk around its picturesque moat with views of the Northern Alps in the distance.
Just steps away, the castle town invites you to stroll along Nakamachi Street and Nawate Street — both lined with traditional storehouses, local craft shops, and charming cafes. A highlight here is a visit to a family-run sake brewery, where you can taste local varieties and learn about their centuries-old brewing traditions.
This combination of heritage, atmosphere, and local flavor makes Matsumoto a fantastic stop in any season.
🌸 Obuse & Zenkoji Temple – Our Favorite Private Tour for Spring & Fall

Obuse is a small cultural town known for the Hokusai Museum, sake breweries, chestnut sweets, and elegant gardens. It pairs beautifully with Zenkoji Temple — the spiritual heart of Nagano, dating back 1,400 years.
This is our favorite spring and autumn combination. In April, cherry blossoms bloom all around Obuse’s cobbled lanes and temple courtyards. In October and November, fall colors frame both locations with warm reds and golds.
Kamikochi – Japan’s Most Breathtaking Mountain Valley (mid-April to mid-November)

Located deep in the Northern Japan Alps, Kamikochi is a protected highland valley known for its pristine rivers, dramatic mountain views, and peaceful walking trails. It’s one of the most beautiful natural destinations in Japan — and one of the most serene.
Kamikochi is only open from mid-April to mid-November, and each season offers its own magic:
In spring (late April–May), the melting snow reveals emerald rivers, budding leaves, and snow-capped peaks.
In summer, it’s a cool escape from the heat, perfect for leisurely hikes along the Azusa River.
In autumn (October), golden larch trees and fiery mountain maples light up the valley — especially around Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond.
The trails are flat, easy to walk, and full of scenic photo spots. Unlike crowded tourist zones, Kamikochi maintains a quiet, almost sacred atmosphere — with no private cars allowed inside the park, and no overdevelopment.
🍂 Best Time to Visit:
Spring freshness: late April to early June
Peak foliage: mid to late October
A private tour to Kamikochi is perfect for those seeking deep nature, beautiful silence, and a break from the ordinary. It can also be paired with Matsumoto Castle or the Daio Wasabi Farm for a stunning full-day trip.

🌿 Daio Wasabi Farm – A Scenic Escape in Any Season

Located in the peaceful countryside of Azumino, the Daio Wasabi Farm is one of Nagano’s most picturesque and relaxing destinations — and it’s worth visiting in any season.
Crystal-clear spring water flows through traditional irrigation channels, surrounded by lush wasabi fields, wooden bridges, and waterwheels that turn slowly against the backdrop of the Northern Alps. The farm is not just for wasabi lovers — it’s a beautiful place to walk, breathe, and connect with nature.
In spring, cherry blossoms and fresh greenery line the waterways, creating a tranquil and photogenic landscape.
In autumn, golden and crimson leaves frame the clear streams and fields, adding warmth and color to the already serene surroundings.
You can enjoy local wasabi dishes at the on-site restaurants, or try the famous wasabi ice cream as you stroll. The farm is flat, easy to walk, and perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking for a slow, nature-filled experience.
Karuizawa & Onioshidashi Volcanic Park (summer and early autumn)

Karuizawa is a stylish resort town at the foot of Mount Asama — popular for its food scene, designer outlets, and peaceful forest cafés. Just nearby, Onioshidashi Park offers surreal volcanic landscapes created by Japan’s most active volcano.
This tour can include:
• Walks on lava trails with Mt. Asama views
• Lunch in a forest café or local soba shop
• Shopping in Karuizawa’s outlet or charming old town
• Seasonal stops at hidden viewpoints or waterfalls
Best enjoyed from late spring to early autumn.
Togakushi (best in summer & Autumn — but gaining popularity in winter)

This sacred mountain village is known for its cool cedar forests, soba culture, and ninja legends — making it a perfect summer escape.
But in recent years, winter visits have quietly gained popularity. While the upper shrine (Okusha) itself may be inaccessible due to heavy snow, many travelers now seek the magical walk along the snow-covered cedar path — serene, quiet, and spiritual.

If you’re planning a 2-day stay in Nagano, pairing Togakushi and the Snow Monkeys makes for one of the most satisfying combinations.
Matsushiro Samurai Town (great in spring and fall)

Just a short drive from Nagano City, Matsushiro offers a peaceful, authentic glimpse into Japan’s samurai past — with fewer tourists.
Explore:
• Samurai residences and temples
• Castle ruins framed by cherry blossoms or autumn colors
• A wartime underground command center built in secrecy
• Cozy miso breweries and soba shops loved by locals
It’s an excellent half-day destination to combine with the Snow Monkeys, or explore deeply on a separate day.
Narai-juku – A Living Post Town from the Edo Era

Nestled in the Kiso Valley of southern Nagano, Narai-juku is one of the best-preserved post towns along the historic Nakasendo Trail, a samurai-era highway that once connected Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). With its long street of beautifully restored wooden buildings, the town offers a rare, immersive step into Japan’s past.
Unlike touristy replicas, Narai-juku is the real thing — quiet, authentic, and atmospheric in every season:
In spring, plum and cherry blossoms bloom along the hillside paths.
In summer, the highland breeze brings cool, refreshing air to the old streets.
In autumn, the surrounding forests glow with reds and golds.
In winter, a light dusting of snow transforms the town into a peaceful, postcard-like scene.
You can stroll past merchant homes, sip tea at a centuries-old shop, browse local lacquerware, and enjoy seasonal sweets made with chestnuts or buckwheat. For travelers interested in Japanese history, architecture, or slower countryside experiences, Narai is a hidden gem — perfect for a half-day or full-day private trip.

🌸 Spring Cherry Blossom Spots (late March to mid-April)

Nagano has some of Japan’s most underrated sakura spots — and private tours are the best way to see them at the right time.
Thanks to the region’s elevation differences, cherry blossoms bloom gradually across Nagano from late March through mid-April. This means we can design a route that “chases” the blossoms — hitting each location at its perfect peak.
Some of our favorite cherry blossom stops include:
• Obuse’s Gansho-in Temple and its elegant town gardens
• Matsushiro Castle Ruins, framed with hundreds of trees
• Joyama Park, a local favorite for hanami picnics
• Countryside cherry tree tunnels on the way to the Snow Monkey Park
• Komoro Castle Ruins, where petals fall over stone walls and old bridges
• Garyu Park in Suzaka, with blossoms reflected in the pond beside a small zoo
• Takada Castle Site in Joetsu, famous for 4,000+ trees illuminated at night
Whether you want a peaceful morning stroll under falling petals or a lively local festival vibe, we’ll take you to the right spot at the right time — based on real-time bloom forecasts and local knowledge.
If you’re visiting between late March and mid-April, let us know — we’ll build a route that makes the most of Nagano’s layered sakura season.
🍁 Nagano’s Best Autumn Foliage Spots (mid-October to early November)

Nagano is one of Japan’s most underrated destinations for fall colors — offering a beautiful mix of mountain landscapes, peaceful temples, and historical towns. Thanks to the region’s varied elevations, you can enjoy vibrant foliage over several weeks by visiting different areas.
Here are some of our favorite places to enjoy autumn leaves:
Zenkoji Temple (Nagano City)
Maple trees around the temple paths and lantern-lit streets turn vivid shades of red and orange. Combine your visit with local street snacks or a quiet morning walk through nearby Joyama Park.Obuse Town
Obuse’s elegant gardens, temple courtyards, and cobbled alleys glow with warm autumn colors. It’s a lovely place to explore on foot — with options to visit the Hokusai Museum, chestnut dessert shops, and local sake breweries.Togakushi Shrine & Forest
The ancient cedar paths of Togakushi are magical in fall, with golden leaves carpeting the trails. Paired with a handmade soba lunch and a stop at a quiet lake or ninja museum, it’s a perfect autumn escape into nature.Matsushiro Castle Ruins & Samurai Town
This historic town is a hidden foliage gem. The castle park and old samurai residences are framed by colorful trees — and because it’s off the beaten path, you’ll likely have it all to yourself.Matsumoto Castle
One of Japan’s most iconic original castles, Matsumoto Castle is especially beautiful in autumn. The contrast between the deep black wooden keep and the fiery maple trees around the moat creates one of the most photogenic fall scenes in the region. You can stroll through the park, explore the castle interior, and enjoy local street food nearby.Kamikochi (Northern Alps)
High in the Japan Alps, Kamikochi offers breathtaking alpine scenery with riverside trails lined by golden larch trees and brilliant mountain maples. The views around Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond are especially stunning in late October. Fall is the perfect time to experience its serenity before winter closures begin in November.
🍂 Best Timing:
High-elevation areas like Kamikochi and Togakushi: around October 10–25
Town-level spots like Zenkoji, Obuse, Matsumoto Castle, and Matsushiro: October 25 – November 10
With a private tour, we’ll customize your route to match the best foliage timing based on real-time forecasts — so you don’t miss the colors at their peak.
Extend Your Trip: 2-Day & 3-Day Private Tour Options
If you have more time, we highly recommend staying 2–3 days in the Nagano–Matsumoto region. Here’s how you could structure it:
Day 1: Snow Monkeys + Zenkoji or Matsushiro
Day 2: Matsumoto Castle + Wasabi Farm + Ukiyo-e Museum
Day 3 (optional): Narai-juku (Nakasendo Post Town) or Kiso Valley hike
We also offer custom itineraries to the Kurobe Alpine Route, the Japan Alps, and even extended trips toward Kanazawa.
❄️ What About Winter?

December to March is prime Snow Monkey season — and demand for private tours is high. Many guests choose to pair the Snow Monkeys with a visit to Obuse or Zenkoji in winter, since both offer warm indoor spaces, cultural charm, and snow-covered scenery.
Or, explore the mystical winter path to Togakushi Shrine, followed by hot soba and warm sake. Matsushiro is another underrated winter gem — often blanketed in snow, but still quiet and atmospheric.
🍽️ Food Experiences in Nagano – From Rustic Local Bites to Refined Cuisine
One of the most rewarding (and delicious) parts of visiting Nagano is discovering its diverse food scene — full of regional specialties, seasonal ingredients, and warm local hospitality. Whether you’re into humble street snacks or high-end dining, Nagano has something for every taste.
Here are just a few of the culinary experiences we often include in our private tours:
Oyaki Dumplings – Hand-grilled or steamed buns filled with vegetables, mushrooms, or sweet bean paste. A traditional local snack and a great way to taste regional flavors.

Shinshu Soba – Nagano’s signature buckwheat noodles, often served cold with a dipping sauce or hot in soup. In areas like Togakushi, soba is handmade daily by local masters, using pure mountain spring water and freshly milled buckwheat flour.

Family-Run Sake Breweries – Visit historical breweries with 300+ years of history, meet the makers, and enjoy tastings of small-batch, seasonal sake you can’t find elsewhere.

Yakitori Izakaya – Hidden spots in alleyways where locals gather for grilled skewers, homemade sides, and casual sake. A great way to experience everyday Japanese nightlife.

Farmhouse Restaurants – Restored kominka (traditional homes) offering slow-cooked, home-style meals using mountain vegetables and foraged ingredients.

Shinshu Beef Shabu-Shabu – Premium local wagyu served with fresh produce and delicate dipping sauces. Available in both classic and modern settings.

Japanese-Italian Fusion Dining – Creative dishes using local ingredients like wild mushrooms, wasabi, or sake lees, presented in stylish bistro settings with paired wines or sake.

From humble B-grade gourmet (B-kyu gurume) to refined multi-course dining, Nagano’s food culture reflects both tradition and creativity — and we’ll tailor your tour to include the right flavors for you.
And unlike many tour operators, we don’t take kickbacks or commissions. We simply take you to places we personally love — where the food is excellent and the service is genuinely warm.
